Manager Research

The Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology, is the largest pediatric comprehensive cancer center in Europe. More than 450 scientists and 900 healthcare professionals work together in Utrecht. All children with cancer in the Netherlands are treated in the Máxima. Throughout our research programs we expect to improve the care of the future. We actively collaborate with Dutch and international hospitals and research centers laying the foundation for further acceleration of pediatric oncological research, now and in the future. Our ultimate goal is to cure every child with cancer with optimal quality of life.

Our ambition is to be one of the leading scientific research institutes for pediatric oncology in the world. The bundling of various expertise will lead to a comprehensive, well-equipped pediatric oncology institute. Our research covers the entire spectrum from: fundamental research using cutting-edge technologies, translational experiments to develop personalized therapies and psychosocial studies that monitor wellbeing of the whole family.

The mission of our research management and supporting research staff is to create a strong fundament on which the researchers can depend in order to achieve their scientific goals. We have several fully operational state-of-the-art core facilities and areas of expertise to support and standardize commonly used technologies by the research groups.

Since the national centralization of pediatric oncology in 2018, we have evolved significantly and broadened our scope. We have a strong strategic orientation and functioning for research as a whole. In line with our strategic goals and the desire for continuous improvement, we are ready for the next phase. Therefor we are looking for a solid and business-minded Manager Research with executive power to strengthen our research management team.

What to expect?

You will work in a mission focused dedicated research institute. In your individual contributor role as Manager Research you will be challenged to ensure a wide spectrum of activities that operationally facilitates our research groups. You will work with a high level of independence and take a lead role on assigned projects with respect to timing and tracking. You will lead 8 direct reports, divided within three teams (operational laboratory, facilities & projects and research secretary), and indirectly a group of 19 in total.

As a Manager Research you will:

• Translate the research requirements into efficient processes and deliver projects successfully and on-time;
• Be a solid leader and go-to expert for the research operations and facilities;
• Help to develop and implement effective cross-functional research activities;
• Strengthen collaboration and interaction with (senior) cross-functional colleagues primarily within research;
• Plan, track and control budget (including financial reporting) and business management of our facilities.

Additionally, you will work on both research-wide projects and preparatory work for the long-term research strategy.

You will join the research management team. You will report directly to the Managing Director Research Leendert Looijenga, who is also Group Leader.

Profile

Are you passionate about research and master strong leadership skills in a vibrant and groundbreaking environment? All from operational towards strategic level, with the acknowledgement that the majority of your work is of a tactical nature.

What you need to be successful?

• A master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. biology, medicine, biotechnology) a PhD is a plus;
• 5-8 years of overall relevant experience within the research field;
• 3+ years of leadership experience of tactical nature in an academic or biotech organization;
• You’re a self-starter and love to solve problems as they arise;
• You’re not afraid to ask the (hard) questions and challenge the status quo;
• You’re able to substantiate based on arguments and make autonomous decisions;
• Agility to be able to deal with several projects at the same time while keeping the right focus;
• Agility to build and maintain solid and positive relations with cross-functional team members;
• Agility to thrive in a high-paced and entrepreneurial environment;
• Business savvy, financial knowledge and insight, and can apply and further develop these in practice.

Working at the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology

In accordance with the collective labour agreement ‘cao algemene ziekenhuizen’ (FWG 70), the salary is minimum of €4.851,- euro and maximum of €7.231,- euro gross per month for a full-time working week (36 hours). Your gross monthly salary will depend on experience and background, complemented by 8,33% gross monthly salary holiday allowance and 8,33 % end-of-year bonus.
